People in the United States in the early 19th century took pride in the fact that their country did not need a permanent army of paid soldiers. The nation instead used volunteer militias made up of local farmers, craftsmen and tradesmen. Towns held militia, or "training days" 2 or 3 times a year, usually in the fall and spring. Many men hated having to come out for training days. As a result, Militia companies were often poorly trained and rowdy. Some men, however, enjoyed military drill and exercises. This uniform belonged to a member of the Franklin Cadets, a volunteer company of militia from Deerfield, Massachusetts, organized in 1823. The Cadets cut dashing figures and brought life to many gatherings with their excellent marching and firing.
