This powder horn, made of a carved cow's horn and plugged with wood, could be hung on the shoulders of the user and was for keeping gunpowder dry and ready for use. Later relatives of the family of Eliezer Hawks of Deerfield, Massachusetts, said that this powder horn was with Hawks when he died during a raid by Native American warriors in 1746 on the Bars section of Deerfield. However, the horn looks much more like powder horns from the late 1700s and early 1800s.
