Dressed in a blue silk gown with a high waist, white lace trimmings, and a matching turban, 19-year-old Rhoda Smith posed for her picture. Rhoda was the daughter of Capt. and Mrs. Reuben Smith. She was born in Northfield, Massachusetts, in 1775 and was a student at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield. She married Henry Bardwell of Deerfield in 1807 and died in 1818 at age 43. Charles Lyman (1778-1814) was probably the artist.
