These bowling pins would have been known as "Nine Pins". A common way of playing Nine Pins would have been to put 8 pins in a circle around the slightly fancier pin (with a line around the head in this example). Each player rolls twice per turn, getting points as long as the center pin stands. It should be the last to fall. If it falls too soon, a player loses their points and starts again
