The memory of 2 Sheldon family members is kept in this hand-colored print complete with weeping mourner, urn-topped stone, and a large tree, probably a willow, a common 19th-century symbol of mourning. A wide range of standard memorial scenes were made by the Hartford, Connecticut, company owned by D.W. Kellogg and Company. This one, printed for 12 years between 1830 and 1842, was probably filled in with names of the dead soon after the daughter, Sophia M. Sheldon, died in 1841. Sophia's mother, Mehitable, had died in 1824.
