A knowledge of suspension systems, wheel construction, upholstery, and decorative painting was needed in order to build an elaborate baby carriage like this one made by Jarvis B. Prentiss of Greenfield, Massachusetts. Wagon and carriage building was a significant local industry in Greenfield in 1835 when this example was constructed. Mr. Prentiss (1804-1844) built the carriage for his infant daughter, Eliza.
