George Sheldon was an antiquarian, an author, an historian, a curator, and a founder of Memorial Hall Museum in Deerfield, Massachusetts. He lived to be ninety-eight years old. The artist, Augustus Vincent Tack (1870-1949) had a studio in New York City, but was a summer resident of Deerfield when he painted this portrait in 1905. Mr. Sheldon's foresight and perseverance were instrumental in the founding of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association in 1870 and the opening of its museum, Memorial Hall, in 1880.
