The long hollow, straight shaft of the pod auger is used for boring holes in wood or earth. Some augers are spiral-shaped. This example, with initials "H.W." scratched on the handle, has a 17 inch handle to which is attached a vertical shaft, or pod, made of wrought iron or steel.
