Painted in his later years, this oil painting of Epaphras Hoyt (1765-1850) shows him seated in a chair wearing a black coat, vest, and a white stock in the fashion of the 1830s. The books in the painting show Maj. Hoyt's interest in history and science. He wrote books on military science, astronomy, and geography and left many notes on a special interest of his, the French and Indian wars.
