Blacksmiths worked in both iron and copper and this item was made by a blacksmith, probably somewhere in New England. Many colonial meals were cooked over an open fire, and were "one-pot" meals such as soups or stews. The serving tool was often a handy ladle, like this copper one with an iron handle. The loop at the end of the handle allowed the utensil to hang within reach.
