This sampler by 9-year-old Caroline Stebbins (1789-1865) is one of a group of samplers stitched by girls, aged 6 to 12, within a 20-year period in Deerfield, Massachusetts. They share the same designs of baskets of flowers, trees, and the branch-like border. Caroline, the daughter of Joseph and Lucy (Frary) Stebbins, went to Deerfield Academy between 1804 and 1807, and in 1810 she married Seth Sheldon when she was 21.
