On August 25, 1746, during King George's War, Samuel Allen (1702-1746) was gathering hay with neighbors and members of his family in a section south of the village of Deerfield (known as the Bars). Indians hiding in the nearby brush attacked them and Mr. Allen was killed. A piece of the shirt he was wearing has been kept in Memorial Hall. His daughter, Eunice, age 13, was tomahawked but survived. She died in 1818 at age 85, and at some time in her life knitted this stocking.
