In his 21 years as a pewter maker, Samuel Danforth, b. 1774, used a total of 10 cutting and shaping tools to mark his pewter. This porringer is clearly marked with "S" "D" and an eagle. Working in Hartford, Connecticut, from 1795 until his death in 1816, Mr. Danforth was the cleverest craftsman of his generation. He also made the most pewter items of his family.
