Printing Help

Printing from the World Wide Web is often unpredictable since the printed output is largely dependent on your individual printer and the Web browser used, not on the Web page being printed. However, here are some tips to help you get the best output.

To Print an Entire Page

If you would like to print both the images and the accompanying information on any page do the following:

1. Select the browser window that contains the item you wish to print by clicking on it.

2. Adjust your printer settings if possible. Remember to consider options such as orientation (portrait or landscape) scale (100% ? enlarged? reduced to better fit on the paper?) and color vs. black/white.

3. Click your browser's print button or choose "Print" from the browser's File menu on the menu bar.

To Print an Image Only

If you would like to print an image of an item from the Digital Collection, navigate to its "Look Closer" page, then follow these directions:

For Macintosh Computers

1. Adjust image size -- Adjust the zoom level and view size of the image to suit your needs by using the controls on the Look Closer page. For detailed instruction on how to use the Look Closer feature, click on the link "Look Closer Instructions" on the Look Closer page. Be aware that a large window size might not print out on a single 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper.

2. Open the image in its own window -- Once you have the image magnification and size adjusted, place your cursor over the image and click and hold down the mouse button until a pop-up menu appears. If you're using Microsoft Internet Explorer, select "Open image in a new window" from the menu. If you're using Netscape Navigator, select "Open this image" from the menu.

3. Print -- The image will appear in a blank page with no other information. Click the print button on your brower's toolbar or select Print from the browser's File menu on the menu bar.

For Windows Computers

1. Adjust image size -- Adjust the zoom level and display size of the image to suit your needs by using the controls on the Look Closer page. For detailed instruction on how to use the Look Closer feature, click on the link "Detailed Instructions" on the Look Closer page. Be aware that a large window size might not print out on a single 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper.

2. (Netscape Navigator) Open image in its own window -- Once you have the image magnification and size adjusted, place your cursor over the image and click and hold down the right mouse button until a pop-up menu appears. Select "View image (filename)" from the menu ( "filename" is the name of the image file you are viewing.)

2. (Internet Explorer) Open image in its own window -- Once you have the image magnification and size adjusted, place your cursor over the image and click and hold down the right mouse button until a pop-up menu appears. Select "Open image in a new window" from the menu. Or, Select "Save Image As..." from the menu. Save the file to a place where you can find it later (e.g. Desktop, My Documents). Go to the location where you just saved the file and double-click on the icon for the file.

3. Print -- On the window which opens with the image, click on the file menu and select "Print" or click the print button on your window's toolbar.

Printing Problems

We have learned that pages that include thumbnail images do not print properly from Netscape Navigator on a Macintosh computer. Certain pages in the following sections of the site may print out with images slightly overlapping other images and text: My Collection, Search Results, Chronology, Browse and People and Places. We apologize for this inconvenience.
