Summary and Objective

After studying photos of bridges from the Digital Collection as they appear, the students will use the Look Closer feature to enhance their knowledge of the topography in this region as it relates to bridge construction. The students will understand that magnification can help them notice things that may otherwise go unnoticed.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. The teacher will describe scientists as great 'detectives' who notice as many details as possible.

Step 2. The teacher will then challenge the students to be 'detectives' as well and to look very carefully at the pictures of bridges from the Digital Collection as they appear on the screen. What features of the topography prompted people to build these bridges?

Step 3. WITHOUT zooming in, the students will write down their ideas.

Step 4. The students will then practice using the Look Closer feature to zoom in on each photo from various perspectives.

Step 5. Next, the students will jot down any new details about each image that were previously not noted.

Step 6. The teacher will divide the class into four or five small groups. Groups will share with each other what they noticed before and after zooming in.

Step 7. Each group will write down all ideas about what was noticed in the initial viewing, and then via the Look Closer feature.

Step 8. Each group will get a chance to report to the whole class on their 'before' and 'after zooming-in' observations. The teacher will praise all for their great 'detective work'!
