Elizabeth Brooks Fuller (1896-1979) painted a number of scenes from the life surrounding her home at The Bars, Deerfield, Massachusetts. Here, she used her watercolors to depict a sulky plow (so called after because of its similarity to a passenger sulky, a 2-wheeled, horse-drawn cart) in one of the fields near her home at The Bars. Many farmers, such has her brother George, kept their horse-drawn plows long after the tractor was introduced. Not only were they able to do relatively delicate work, horses often were able to operate in fields where tractors could get bogged down. This appears to have been painted in the fall, when the fields could have been waterlogged and particularly muddy.
