This steak knife was made at the Nichols Brothers cutlery plant in Greenfield, Massachusetts, between 1892 and 1905. Walter E. Nichols was born in Greenfield in 1852. He founded the cutlery firm with his brother, J. Henry, in1892. Ten years later they built a threading tools factory that combined with the cutlery firm to make American Tap & Die Corporation. American Tap & Die in turn combined in 1925 with the Williamsburg Manufacturing Company to form the Threadwell Tool Company, still in Greenfield. Threadwell continued for many years in Greenfield before closing in 1985. Walter Nichols lived in Greenfield until his death in 1928. He was a mainstay of the community, serving as a trustee of the Franklin Savings Institution. His son, W. Herbert, one of his five children, was President and Treasurer of G.A. Sheldon, Inc., of Greenfield, and was vice president of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association.
