In the 18th century, before the use of stoves for cooking, food was prepared at the hearth, near or on the fire. This implement, made of wrought iron probably by a local blacksmith, was used to toast bread. The fleur-de-lis design left a decorative imprint on the bread after the surrounding portion was toasted.
