Frances and Mary Allen's photograph of a young "Puritan" girl reading is typical of the way in which the Deerfield, Massachusetts, sisters' turn of the century photographs romanticized New England's remote past. The Allens provided the clothing their models wore, and they painstakingly choreographed the lighting and mood. The book the girl holds reminds the viewer of the essential role literacy played in Puritan religion and culture.
