George Fuller (1822-1884) was Deerfield, Massachusetts' most famous artist. Celebrated for his paintings in the art world of the late 19th century, Fuller nonetheless never went far from his Deerfield roots. In this painting he depicts the back of the family's barn of their farm at The Bars in Deerfield. The farm, as well as a section of the town of Deerfield, took its unusual name for the way a distant owner had chosen to fence off his fields. This barn was used to store hay and house farm animals. Before the barn are the corn fields, used both for human and animal feed.
