In 1893, Ellen Miller (1854-1929) moved to Deerfield, Massachusetts. In 1895, she co-authored "Wild Flowers of North-Eastern States" with Margaret Whiting, with whom the following year she co-founded the Deerfield Society of Blue and White Needlework. Ellen Miller designed many of the embroideries and mastered the use of vegetable dyes to color the threads used by the Society.
