This record and memorial was commissioned by the town of Sunderland in 1880. By then, only 10 of the 54 Sunderland men who had served in the war were still living there. Of the remainder, 26 had died, either in the war or after; the remaining 21 were elsewhere in the country. This record was written only fifteen years after the war, but even then the memory of individual soldiers had begun to fade. Like the Grand Army of the Republic, this record was intended to keep alive the memory of those who had served.
