The William Coleman House, designed by Asher Benjamin in 1797, was first a private home and the finest example in the town of Greenfield, Massachusetts. By 1829 it had become a high school for young ladies. Wings were added to either end of the building to accommodate classrooms and dormitories, similar to the architect's original plans, never executed, for two semi-detached octagonal pavilions. The school was out of business by 1843, and when this lithograph was made it was the residence of the Honorable Almon Brainard, a lawyer and businessman who lived in the house from 1844 to 1864.
