This wooden tankard is a more elaborate version of the wooden drinking vessels and utensils that most Americans owned and used in the 17th and early 18th centuries. The more prosperous ate from pewter and earthenware bowls, plates and cups. A tiny minority could afford imported porcelain. This wooden tankard survived to the present day because the family that owned it passed it down as a family heirloom from the 18th century.
