The portrait of Polly Stebbins (1792-1869), painted by an unidentified artist, shows a woman in a black dress posed near a Grecian column with red drapery in the background. She is wearing earrings and a brooch and a red comb is visible in her hair. Polly, along with her younger brother Rowland, was born deaf. Her father sent the two of them to school in Hartford, Connecticut when The Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb opened in 1817.
