During the late 19th century, decorative arts in America took full advantage of the Gothic Revival and the return to handcrafts espoused by John Ruskin. George Fuller's (1822-1884) easel, with its snake's head gargoyles, is reminiscent of Chartres Cathedral in France. This is not an artist's easel to be used while painting, it is for display only. His best and boldest paintings, those he wished to display in his front parlor, would have been displayed on this high-style furniture piece.
