Made and owned in the Connecticut River Valley of Massachusetts, this bed covering is quilted in a bold and dramatic design of a central plant or tree springing from a large heart at the base - a variation on the "tree of life" design. The techniques and designs of bed quilts were first perfected on petticoats. This green-dyed example is attributed to Olive Curtiss Baker of Granville, Massachusetts, about 1795. The quilt is made entirely of wool, the top and bottom of woven fabric and the filler of sheep's wool.
