This photograph was taken by a Greenfield doctor, Charles Canedy, who served with the U.S. Army in Siberia in 1918 and 1919. America sent troops to fight in the Russian Civil War (1917-1922) against the Bolshevik (later Soviet) government. Armored trains were vital tools in the war. The Siberian front was far from the industrial base of Russia, and railroads were essential for the armies. Trains loaded with guns and troops regularly patrolled the lines. An American officer (back to camera) inspects this train. It is manned with anti-Bolshevik troops.
