Many Americans at the turn of the 20th century developed a newfound fascination with the people, customs and objects of the early colonial period. Industrialization, mass production and an ever more diverse population helped stimulate interest in what many Americans imagined to have been a simpler, more intimate world. This carefully posed photograph reveals as much about early 20th century concerns as it does about Puritan women and their role in colonial society.
