Some family registers were also mourning pieces, commemorating the death of a member of the family. This example, embroidered by sixteen-year-old Nancy Hoyt, was probably worked when she was a student at Deerfield Academy during the summer of 1804 after the death of her father David, at age 46, in the previous year. Schoolgirl embroideries were just that and were most often done in schools or academies under the instruction of a needlework teacher.
