In the days before fire departments, most homes had one or more fire buckets made of leather which would be filled repeatedly with water to put out fires. A citizen was expected to rally to the scene of the fire as quickly as possible with his fire bucket(s) in hand. This one is painted with the name "F.Hawks" and probably belonged to Frederick Hawks of Deerfield, Massachusetts, born in 1817.
