Taken from the gates at the entrance to Smith College, this view of the Baptist Church, the yellow elementary school, and the Academy of Music provides a scene of the Northampton, Massachusetts, Main Street in 1905. Within a few steps a resident of this county seat of Hampshire County could find religion, education, and cultural offerings in these three brick buildings. The trees on the south side of the street compete with the tall poles carrying electricity and telephone service on the north.
