Porcelain tea sets, made for export in China, were not common in rural towns in America in the early 19th century. English wares were less expensive and more available. This sugar bowl with cover is a part of a tea set owned by Rhoda Smith of Northfield, Massachusetts, who married Henry Bardwell of Deerfield, Massachusetts, in 1807. Decorated with small pink enamel flowers and with a litchi nut as the finial on the cover, the sugar bowl and its accompanying tea things were the height of fashion.
