The Mohawk Trail is one of the earliest and most famous scenic routes in the United States. Traveled first by Native Americans, among them the Kanien'kehaka (Mohawk,) and later by European settlers and their descendents, the Mohawk Trail became a designated scenic route in 1914. Scenic routes like the Mohawk Trail fed a back-to-nature movement while allowing turn-of-the-20th century Americans to indulge their growing love affair with the automobile. The Whitcomb Summit house was (and remains) a popular stop on the Trial. The travelers in this postcard take advantage of the tri-state view and gift shop.
