Embossed beadwork was at its height of popularity with the Iroquois in the second half of the 19th century. This bag is made of black velvet with multicolored floral beadwork, red cloth trim and blue beaded fringe. It has the same pattern on both sides but with different colors. Native American beaded bags of this style and shape were popular among EuroAmericans during the late Victorian era in the United States. While made primarily for sale, Iroquois people wore these as part of traditional dress as well.
