A wide variety of standardized memorial scenes were produced by the Hartford, Connecticut lithography firm owned by D.W. Kellogg and Company. This example, published for twelve years between 1830 and 1842, was probably dedicated soon after the daughter, Sophia M. Sheldon, died in 1841. Sophia's mother, Mehitable, had died in 1824. The memory of the two Sheldon family members is preserved in this hand-colored lithograph complete with weeping mourner, urn-topped stone, and a large tree, probably intended to be a willow, a common 19th century symbol of mourning.
