Elsie Putnam lived in Deerfield, Massachusetts, where she had moved with her parents in 1866 at the age of two. She lived there the rest of her life and died there in 1949. At the time of this diary she was 24 years old. She was single and taught at the Green River School in nearby Greenfield, although she scarcely mentions it here. In this diary she briefly describes the Blizzard of '88 (p. 25), which blanketed Deerfield with 24" of snow in three days whipped by high winds. During this year, she attended a funeral, which she describes in detail (pp. 31-35), spent time with the Allen sisters (p. 93, for example), and ended the year with a Christmas celebration (p. 123). Putnam did not marry until 1914.
