This riding crop or swagger stick was apparently custom-made for Julia D.S. Snow (1891-1984), a resident of Greenfield, Massachusetts, and army nurse during World War I. Its tip is a modified bullet atop a silvered bullet casing. The head has the War Department-authorized symbol for the Army School of Nursing, headquartered at the Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC, where Snow taught from 1917 until 1922. Walking sticks or crops were often carried by stylish people during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
