Native people made and used this wooden bowl as a container for serving and eating food. It was hand-carved using special stone tools used for scraping and shaping wooden objects. The notched handle was probably used to hang the bowl with twine from the rafters of a wigwam or to tie it to a pack for travel. During the Late Woodland and Contact periods (1000-300 years ago) Native Americans also made containers from clay (pottery) and baskets and bags woven from plants (rushes, twine) or wood splints.
