At the turn of the 20th century, before the age of the automobile (Henry Ford built his first car in 1893), bridges were intended to carry foot traffic, electric cars or trolleys, and rail cars. This view over the Deerfield River in Greenfield, Massachusetts, illustrates three bridges, each with a specific purpose. All are built on stone pillars; only the covered bridge, meant for pedestrians and horse-drawn carts, with perhaps an occasional automobile, is constructed of wood.
