The Odd Fellows was a lodge originally founded in England during the 18th century. It was established in the United States in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1819. It took its name from what it felt was its uniqueness of purpose, which was to help the poor, sick, orphaned, and "distressed," something they felt was missing in 18th century England. Like many fraternal societies, it found fertile ground in 19th century America, where a rising middle class sought out fraternal organizations in the midst of rapid social change.
