Stephen West Williams was a prolific writer as well as an esteemed physician. In addition to an active medical practice in Deerfield, Massachusetts, he delivered and published treatises on medical subjects including a publication on medical jurisprudence. He was also interested in the Williams family genealogy and wrote a history of the Williams family as well as this memoir of what was, perhaps, the most famous member of the clan, the Reverend John Williams (1664-1729). Reverend Williams was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, and came to Deerfield, on the frontier, when he was 22 years old. He was carried to Canada in 1704, returned two years later and resumed his ministry. The Reverend Williams served the people of Deerfield until his death in 1729.
