The Mohawk Trail in western Massachusetts crosses Hoosac Mountain, connecting Greenfield at the east end with the town of North Adams to the west. The Massachusetts Legislature chartered a toll road in 1797 that was to run between Charlemont and Hoosac Mountain. The current Trail more or less follows this older route. This postcard shows early motorists descending the mountain and approaching the Trail's famous Hairpin Turn. The Mohawk Trail was, by the turn of the 20th century, one of the earliest and most famous of the nation's designated "scenic routes."
