This view of Deerfield, Massachusetts' Mount Sugarloaf and the Pocumtuck Range reveals the mountain silhouette that inspired Pocumtuck storytellers to tell the story of "Wequamps," the great beaver. From this angle, the head and body of the fallen "beaver" can be easily seen. This image also depicts Deerfield's South Meadows being readied for onion planting in April. In preparation for planting, wagons full of manure were shoveled on the fields. Before the availability of commercial fertilizers, manure was an integral component to improve soil.
