The family standing before their home on Conway Road (now Massachusetts State Route 116) in the town of Deerfield, Massachusetts, is probably the immigrant family of Wyciech and Michilena (or Mikalina) Ostroski. The Ostroskis emigrated to the United States in 1902 from the Polish regions of Russia with their young cousin, John Tublonski. This picture was probably taken just after their arrival. The couple were wed that year, and soon after started a family and anglicized their names to "William and Helena Ostrowski." That year, the Ostrowskis owned this home, farmland, and a number of farm animals.
This photograph comes from the Howes Brothers collection of photographs. The Howes Brothers, based in Ashfield, Massachusetts, made more than 20,000 images of New England rural life from 1890 to around 1910, offering a glimpse into the lives of people rarely visible in history.
