The town of Greenfield reacted to the news of America's entry into the First World War in April 1917 with enthusiasm. The eager recruits were put into a temporary training camp at Federal Park in Greenfield (no longer existing).

Julia Snow, a librarian who later became a Red Cross nurse, took this picture from the porch of her family home in Greenfield. This event was probably the 17th of August, 1917, when the temporary camp was moved to Westfield. The troops are marching toward Main Street and the train station.
