Cornelius Kelley was a blacksmith in Deerfield, Massachusetts, in the early years of the 20th century. This sign hung outside his shop at the eastern end of Academy Lane. As demand from farmers for traditional blacksmithing services such as shoeing horses and mending farm equipment lessened, Kelley began crafting wrought iron ornamental art objects as part of Deerfield's craft revival.
