Buttoned up in their best clothes, young scholars pose for a school picture by Alvah and George Howe, traveling photographers from Ashfield, Massachusetts. Note the formality and the uniformity of the clothes in 1900. Only the female teacher, at the upper left, wears a long dress. She is pursuing one of the few respectable career options for women in this period. Of the fourteen schools in Deerfield in 1900, twelve were one-room schoolhouses. This class, housed in the remodeled Town House, was one of the only two with separate grades.
