Attracted by scenic vistas, early motorists drove along the Mohawk Trail, one of the nation's earliest designated scenic routes. Its famous Hairpin Curve was a good place to stop. Those descending could cool brakes smoking from the steep descent. Those driving up could cool radiators that could reach the boiling point under the stress of the steep ascent.
