The Third Pageant of Deerfield, Massachusetts, (1916) again re-enacted episodes from the 1704 Raid on Deerfield. Here, "Indians" are leading the captives taken during that raid northward, to Canada. The little girl sitting on the shoulder of the "Indian" was Dorothy Andrews, playing Eunice Williams, a captive who chose to never return. The 1916 pageant had many characters playing symbolic, or allegorical, figures, much more so than earlier pageants. During this episode characters personifying the Pioneer Spirit, Courage, and Hope encouraged both the captives shown here and their relatives left behind. This photograph was taken by Deerfield's most famous photographers, the sisters Frances and Mary Allen.
